Final Blog Journal - Novel's question

#1

Everybody has a happy ending in this novel:
- Taylor and Jax, Alice and Cash are going to get married.
- Turtle now can live with Taylor, but she have to return to the Cherokee Nation 3 months a years during her break time.
- Annawake continue her job, tries to bring her brother back to the tribe
- By the way, my favorite character, the funniest one in this novel, Barbie, she also has happy ending, too. She ran a way with her treasure, and nobody finds or tries to arrest her.

#2

I think the main message of this book is to impart that cooperation can solve a lot of problem even the very difficult and sensitive one such as race in this novel. Most of the time, Taylor just kept escaping, did not try to work together with Annawake, and her situation got worse and worse. However, at the ending chapters, when she tries to cooperate, things became a lot better, and the trouble was finally solved easily.

Another message I realize is that, to communicate with other culture, you have to be very sensitive. Annawake is an example, she didn't know Taylor well, yet, she sent Taylor a warning from the beginning, and it made the situation more complitcated.

#3

The second time Annawake told the myth of the Six Pigs in Heaven, she added the seventh one, and I think, she implied Taylor, the mother who love her child so much. And she and Turtle kind of became a bridge to connect two culture, the white's and the tribal one.

The story of King Solomon is also related with Taylor's situation now. As we know, the adoption of Turtle is illegal, and Taylor would lose in the court, yet, she came to the Cherokee Nation. It means Taylor was ready to give up Turtle for her good, and it proves how much Taylor loves her daughter.

No, I won't recommend this book to my friends because it's pretty long; however, if he/she is taking the class HUM 105 - Intercultural Communication, I will. This novel is related a lot with my HUM class, and it can help students who are in this class see more examples of intercultural communication.
By the way, although it is interesting, but it will not become my favorite book because it does not have lots of actions.

Hi Loc - I was surprised at the brevity of your answers. (only 398 words!!) I was hoping that you would spend more time explaining your thought and ideas. What you did write was very good, but it seemed that you limited yourself to surface answers only. Only Turtle is really happy by the end of the novel (perhaps Jax, too.) Taylor has had to compromise on her custody of Turtle, but Cash and Alice didn't get full custody either. Annawake finally sees how lonely and isolated she has become. I do like your inclusion of Barbie - I like to think of her still doing "her own thing."

Your answer to#2 is good. Cooperation can make life go so much more smoothly sometimes. Yes, I agree that Annawake did not show much sensitivity and really got Taylor running with her threats.

I liked your connecting Uncle Ledger's tale of King Solomon to what finally happens about Turtle's custody. It really wasn't connected to Annawake's retelling of the myth, but it is nice that you threw it in.

Next time, take more time to give more profound answers.

your score: 40/50
